According to the recent news released by the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME), Shen Yang, a doctoral student at the NEU School of Metallurgy who studies under Prof. Wang Cong, has been awarded the Henry DeWitt Smith Scholarship of 2021 for his innovative contribution to the phase-change kinetic studies of heat-resistant steel.

Founded in 1871, the AIME is one of the oldest international institutes of engineers, dubbed as initial institutes of engineers together with ASCE, ASME, IEEE and AIChE. Currently, the AIME consists of 4 affiliates, i.e., AIST, SME, SPE and TMS, and has more than 200,000 members, who are professionals and technicians from all over the world.

The Henry DeWitt Smith Scholarship was established in 1967, mainly used to reward the excellent postgraduate students in leading global universities who are committed to studies on mining, metallurgy, materials and petroleum engineering. The scholarship is awarded to at most 4 people worldwide each year (at most 1 place for each affiliate of AIME).
